Currenta relies on a green electricity supply contract with ENGIE

• ENGIE and Currenta save CO2 and implement sustainable mobility at the Currenta locations • The concluded Power Purchase Agreement for subsidized wind turbines provides for 50 gigawatt hours of electricity over a period of 16 months

image of the post Currenta relies on a green electricity supply contract with ENGIE

The Chempark operator Currenta and the energy supplier ENGIE have signed a green electricity supply contract, a so-called Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). ENGIE will supply Currenta with renewable electricity from three German wind farms, along with the associated guarantees of origin. The wind farms will thus be retained after the EEG funding expires for the energy transition and will be used for sustainable mobility. Currenta will supply its own e-charging stations and the charging infrastructure of its customers with high-quality green electricity from the region. ENGIE supplies 50 gigawatt hours of electricity over 16 months; with this amount a typical electric car could circle the world around 9,000 times.
Dr. Alexander von Scheven, who developed the topic of electromobility as a digital business model in Chempark, emphasizes: “I am very pleased that, together with ENGIE, we can offer our customers regionally generated green electricity and thus make a contribution to the decarbonization of mobility.”

Green electricity supply contracts as part of the sustainability strategy

Currenta is acting in the spirit of the energy transition – also with regard to the desired and extremely ambitious expansion of renewable energies in Germany. “With the use of electrode boilers for flexible electricity-based heat generation as a supplement to gas-based heat generation in our combined heat and power (CHP) systems, we are stimulating the expansion of renewable energies. In addition, the CHP systems are known to be characterized by high energy efficiency, ”says Dr. Hans-Jörg Preisigke, Head of Energy Policy at Currenta. “In this respect, the use of green electricity also fits into this strategy for sustainability, which we naturally want to expand.”

“We are pleased that we can support Currenta as an energy partner in the further implementation of its sustainability strategy. Green electricity supply contracts are an excellent way to save CO2 in terms of the environment and economy, ”says Jörg Nauerth, Senior Originator at ENGIE.

INNOVATHON: a unique challenge, placing innovation and creativity at the heart of ENGIE

Sustainability without our clients is like a car without energy. That’s why we decided to organize an Innovathon on sustainability with the participation of our clients, employees and stakeholders.

  • Events
  • 25/09/2020
image of the post INNOVATHON: a unique challenge, placing innovation and creativity at the heart of ENGIE

Our key clients – Umicore, Michelin, Gaznat, Borealis among others –  partners, stakeholders and our experts worked together to imagine and co-develop concrete solutions answering our clients’ sustainable goals.

During an ideation phase of 3 months, ENGIE’s experts submitted solutions on decarbonization based on clients’ objectives. We have collected 27 ideas matching our decarbonization challenge : all these solutions  have been designed in-house.

This summer, our teams of Innovathors introduced their ideas in front of a jury made of our clients and Executive Comity members of ENGIE, who selected 12 best solutions to access the next step of the INNOVATHON challenge.

Innovathors had the opportunity to assess the viability of their concept and to build a business model during acceleration workshops. In the end, 8 fittest solutions were elected to participate to the last round of this challenge.

On September 29th & 30th, the 8 finalist teams will prototype and develop their concepts with engineers to present a beta version in front of our clients and the jury.

After several months of concept development and preparation to meet our clients’ decarbonization challenges, 8 projects were presented to the jury.
Finally, after deliberations, only one project was selected to be fully developed: Gas origin certification for better traceability

“With this innovation, you could purchase certificates of origin from any kind of sources according your energy choices with your strategies: from countries close to consumer zones or just by avoiding shale gas for example. You would have the unique ability to communicate on your gas sourcing mix and not only on your green gas purchases.”

The winning solution will be implemented within ENGIE and be a part of our wide range of trading energy solutions.

ENGIE analysts and clients discuss energy prices over breakfast

The Commodities Breakfast, held at the Pavillon Vendome in Paris on November 27, offered ENGIE’s clients an exclusive opportunity to interact with our economic experts and learn more about macroeconomic trends and the shifting dynamics of energy markets.

  • Events
  • 25/11/2018
image of the post ENGIE analysts and clients discuss energy prices over breakfast

The theme of the event was “Economic slowdown, carbon price uncertainty… what are the prospects for energy prices in 2019?”

Eighty ENGIE clients were invited to the breakfast to attend a presentation on the latest macroeconomic and energy news. They also had the opportunity to directly interact with our experts after the breakfast.

Macro trends

The event comes at a time when the global economy is bracing for a slowdown, after nearly a decade of expansion following the Great Recession. Rising inflationary pressures could result in an increased tightening of monetary policy and further accentuate the cyclical downturn.

European gas prices, on the other hand, increased significantly in 2018, in line with rising oil, coal and CO2 prices. Europe is set to become more and more vulnerable to shocks on the LNG market and fluctuations in Asian demand as domestic production drops. The growth of LNG export capacity will also start to have an effect on prices from 2019 onwards.

Surging carbon prices

Meanwhile, a return of speculators led to a fourfold increase in carbon prices in just one year—reaching levels not seen since 2008. Even if there is a reduction in carbon credits next year, the question on everybody’s mind is whether the current price is justified.

The Commodities Breakfast did provide our clients with an insight into the factors that might affect the prices.

ENGIE and Institut Pasteur hold a joint hackathon to advance genetic science

ENGIE analysts participated in a joint two-day hackathon with scientists from the Institut Pasteur and succeeded in developing an algorithm to automate the analysis of DNA sequences. Three teams, each composed of members from both ENGIE and Institut Pasteur, competed in the hackathon to develop a method to identify the position of chromosome loops.

  • Events
  • 25/10/2018
image of the post ENGIE and Institut Pasteur hold a joint hackathon to advance genetic science

The hackathon, held on October 4 and 5 in Paris, was an opportunity for ENGIE Global Energy Management experts to work on a cutting-edge research topic outside of the energy field. The hackathon challenged our experts to implement a method of their choice to locate the positions of chromosome loops and provided them with a great opportunity to work across disciplines with experimental and computational biologists to improve our understanding of DNA.

ENGIE is committed to building a better planet by using its expertise not just in the energy sector, but across all sectors. It has special expertise in machine learning—an approach relevant to the identification of loop positions.

The existing algorithms do not allow for the accurate detection of chromosome loop events with many undetected patterns. Machine learning, on the other hand, allows us to generate simulated loop data and a group of simulated maps with known loop positions to evaluate the accuracy of the different methods proposed and rank them.

Fundamental biological processes such as replication, regulation of gene expression and DNA repair depend on chromosome architecture. Information acquired through the new algorithm will give us a better understanding of some of the biological processes and mechanisms involved in human pathologies such as the development of tumor cells.

The hackathon was a fun and innovative approach to interdisciplinary collaboration that allowed GEM experts to take their research beyond the energy sector. Energy and healthcare are two fields of great importance to people in their daily lives and ENGIE is committed to using its skills to improve lives across these sectors.
