We recently organized a press conference on the topic of “Energy Price Perspectives” and presented some valuable insights.

Our team at ENGIE Global Energy Management & Sales had the privilege to share our expertise and present the latest developments in the wholesale energy markets. During the conference, we discussed the evolution of the markets since the beginning of the crisis, highlighting important factors such as the major gas market places in Europe and the interconnection of the European gas network.

Drop in Wholesale Gas Prices

One key takeaway was the significant drop in wholesale gas prices in Europe since the start of the year, with spot prices experiencing a noticeable decline while future prices remained relatively stable at a higher level. We also discussed the storage levels of gas in Europe, which have reached a record high, signaling a relaxed market in the coming months but a persistent risk premium for future years.

Contraction in Gas Demand and LNG Imports

Additionally, we addressed the contraction in gas demand across Europe, particularly in the industrial, electricity production, and public distribution sectors. Similarly, we highlighted the decrease in LNG imports in Asia, emphasizing the European market’s substantial imports of liquefied natural gas.

Unveiling Five-Year Price Forecasts

Furthermore, we unveiled our five-year price forecasts, offering valuable insights into energy prices for our professional clients. Our forecasts are based on meticulous analysis, incorporating macroeconomic assumptions, supply-demand balance projections, fundamental indicators for gas and electricity prices, and considerations of production availability.

The gas prices in Europe are expected to remain “on a high plateau” around 60€/MWh until 2027, according to market analysts. Electricity prices in France are projected to stay at a high plateau between 2023 and 2025 before a limited downward movement begins from 2026 onwards.

Gas & Electricity Price Forecast: Factors and Outlook

The forecast revealed that gas prices are expected to remain high until 202 7, influenced by factors such as high stock levels, a challenging macroeconomic environment, and limited new LNG export capacities.

For electricity prices in France, a plateau of elevated prices is foreseen between 2023 and 2025 due to low nuclear production and sustained prices of fuels and CO2 quotas. However, a limited downward trend could be anticipated from 2026 onwards, driven by improved nuclear availability, reduced fuel costs, and increased renewable capacity installation.

Our presentation introduced EnergyScan, a platform designed to simplify energy markets. With its user-friendly interface, customizable features, and access to comprehensive data covering wholesale energy markets in France and internationally, EnergyScan aims to empower professionals in making informed decisions regarding risk coverage and investments.

We are proud of the valuable knowledge and perspectives we shared during this press conference, and we invite you to learn more about EnergyScan and its offerings on our website. Stay informed, make data-driven decisions, and navigate the dynamic energy landscape with confidence!

image of the post All about E4, an ENGIE client event to step up decarbonization!

It is in this context that the Group is organizing the E4 event, which aims to involve clients so that they commit themselves serenely to the decarbonization of their activities. Conferences, key notes and workshops with our clients will take place throughout the day.

At ENGIE, we are convinced that the enormous challenge of this transition can only be met collectively by sharing successes and bringing together all energies, expertise and talents. Therefore, during a whole day ENGIE will bring together the 300 most committed companies to put into perspective, together and in practice the transformations necessary for a Zero-Carbon trajectory.

This day, which takes place on the mythical Philippe Chatrier tennis court at Roland Garros (in Paris), ENGIE will welcome:

  • More than 400 international attendees
  • 75 major global industrial and service groups, including Air France, Google, Faurecia (Forvia Group), BASF, Danone, CMA CGM, Saint-Gobain, Procter & Gamble, Orange, etc.
  • 20 Global Accounts represented by C-Level members (led by KCO)
  • Top 150 B2B customers invited by our operational entities (All ENGIE’s Global Business Unit included)

What does E4 represent for ENGIE Global Energy Management & Sales?

This event represents for ENGIE Global Energy Management & Sales a real opportunity to gather at this event, all our B2B clients in order to present them our portfolio of solutions to accompany them in their decarbonization journey.

Moreover, during the E4, our ENGIE Global Energy Management experts highlight our solutions related to green and low carbon energy and risk management & market access. As an example:

Green & Low Carbon Energy

  • Power Purchase Agreement: a long-term renewable energy contracts to decarbonize electricity consumption.
  • Biomethane & Low carbon gas: a green energy for the energy transition.

Risk Management & Market Access

  • EGMA: an intuitive market access platform.
  • EnergyScan: an energy market analysis tool.
  • EMA: a green desk focused on Environmental Market Access.

Customer voice

This day is unique: rather than offering a demonstration of our solutions, we adopt a customer-centric approach. Concrete examples of transition are shared by major industrial and service-sector players alongside our experts during the “Customer Voice“:

  • Orange energy challenge: how to drive & accelerate a cross-country decarbonization roadmap?
Hervé Suquet from Orange and Jérôme Malka from ENGIE Global Energy Management & Sales.

  • First in europe: 24/7 carbon-free guaranteed energy supply agreement

  • Taking the next step in climate protection – from targets to delivery
Horatio Evers from BASF and Katrin Fuhrmann from ENGIE Global Energy Management & Sales.

E4 was  great space for dialogue, exchange, first-hand accounts, client feedback and expert pitches to push ahead with solutions that work and support our clients as they implement their decarbonization processes on an industrial scale.

Currenta relies on a green electricity supply contract with ENGIE

• ENGIE and Currenta save CO2 and implement sustainable mobility at the Currenta locations • The concluded Power Purchase Agreement for subsidized wind turbines provides for 50 gigawatt hours of electricity over a period of 16 months

  • Events
  • 25/11/2021
image of the post Currenta relies on a green electricity supply contract with ENGIE

The Chempark operator Currenta and the energy supplier ENGIE have signed a green electricity supply contract, a so-called Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). ENGIE will supply Currenta with renewable electricity from three German wind farms, along with the associated guarantees of origin. The wind farms will thus be retained after the EEG funding expires for the energy transition and will be used for sustainable mobility. Currenta will supply its own e-charging stations and the charging infrastructure of its customers with high-quality green electricity from the region. ENGIE supplies 50 gigawatt hours of electricity over 16 months; with this amount a typical electric car could circle the world around 9,000 times.
Dr. Alexander von Scheven, who developed the topic of electromobility as a digital business model in Chempark, emphasizes: “I am very pleased that, together with ENGIE, we can offer our customers regionally generated green electricity and thus make a contribution to the decarbonization of mobility.”

Green electricity supply contracts as part of the sustainability strategy

Currenta is acting in the spirit of the energy transition – also with regard to the desired and extremely ambitious expansion of renewable energies in Germany. “With the use of electrode boilers for flexible electricity-based heat generation as a supplement to gas-based heat generation in our combined heat and power (CHP) systems, we are stimulating the expansion of renewable energies. In addition, the CHP systems are known to be characterized by high energy efficiency, ”says Dr. Hans-Jörg Preisigke, Head of Energy Policy at Currenta. “In this respect, the use of green electricity also fits into this strategy for sustainability, which we naturally want to expand.”

“We are pleased that we can support Currenta as an energy partner in the further implementation of its sustainability strategy. Green electricity supply contracts are an excellent way to save CO2 in terms of the environment and economy, ”says Jörg Nauerth, Senior Originator at ENGIE.

ENGIE main player at the Re-source event 2021

ENGIE was a strategic partner of the RE-Source event in Amsterdam, the European platform for corporate renewable energy sourcing, from 14 to 15 October 2021 and supported by Wind Europe, SolarPowerEurope, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and CDP.

  • Events
  • 25/10/2021
image of the post ENGIE main player at the Re-source event 2021

The RE-Source Event is the annual gathering of corporate buyers and clean energy suppliers, where existing challenges are tackled and future solutions are born. As every year, ENGIE Global Energy Management presented experts on various energy-related topics during panel discussions and workshops:

  • Jérôme Malka for the “Will supply meet demand?” topic: In this session, representatives from energy-intensive companies and renewable electricity providers discussed the challenges of securing the large volumes of renewable electricity required, innovative solutions, new business models, and what we can expect in the future as the industry works to reduce its carbon footprint.
    ? Replay: https://vimeo.com/637062097
  • Sébastien de Menten with the topic “A timely match: Moving towards 24/7 renewable electricity sourcing (workshop)”: The objective of this interactive workshop was to discuss with key stakeholders the steps are required to move to more granular accounting of renewables over a timeframe of one hour or less. The main building blocks were covered: flexibility, data for 24/7 matching and measurement, metrics and certificates.
  • Sarah Drevermann with the interesting topic “Let’s talk: GOs (workshop)”: This session built on the foundation established in the joint Guarantees of Origin report at RE-Source 2021 by RE-Source and RECS International, exploring the need and motivation for GOs and explaining the GO market. Expert speakers also presented the most common procurement models, from unbundled GOs to PPAs to 24/7 matching, including analyses of the complexities and potential impacts of each model.
  • Ralf Bernhard for “National Market Deep Dives – Western Europe, Germany and Ireland”: It is important to understand nuances in renewable energy markets at the national level and the latest developments in corporate sourcing. Our expert Ralf, among other experts, provided an overview of the market, including information on challenges, investment and corporate sourcingtrends, how Fit For 55 will play out on a national level, and more.
    https://vimeo.com/623562440

Thanks to our experts for their contribution to this global event.
Their knowledge was highlighted as well as ENGIE’s expertise in renewable energy towards a Net Zero carbon world.

ENGIE is committed to a neutral carbon future with an ambitious target: to reach Net Zero carbon by 2045. We have a key role to play in the global shift towards sustainable energy sources.

INNOVATHON: a unique challenge, placing innovation and creativity at the heart of ENGIE

Sustainability without our clients is like a car without energy. That’s why we decided to organize an Innovathon on sustainability with the participation of our clients, employees and stakeholders.

image of the post INNOVATHON: a unique challenge, placing innovation and creativity at the heart of ENGIE

Our key clients – Umicore, Michelin, Gaznat, Borealis among others –  partners, stakeholders and our experts worked together to imagine and co-develop concrete solutions answering our clients’ sustainable goals.

During an ideation phase of 3 months, ENGIE’s experts submitted solutions on decarbonization based on clients’ objectives. We have collected 27 ideas matching our decarbonization challenge : all these solutions  have been designed in-house.

This summer, our teams of Innovathors introduced their ideas in front of a jury made of our clients and Executive Comity members of ENGIE, who selected 12 best solutions to access the next step of the INNOVATHON challenge.

Innovathors had the opportunity to assess the viability of their concept and to build a business model during acceleration workshops. In the end, 8 fittest solutions were elected to participate to the last round of this challenge.

On September 29th & 30th, the 8 finalist teams will prototype and develop their concepts with engineers to present a beta version in front of our clients and the jury.

After several months of concept development and preparation to meet our clients’ decarbonization challenges, 8 projects were presented to the jury.
Finally, after deliberations, only one project was selected to be fully developed: Gas origin certification for better traceability

“With this innovation, you could purchase certificates of origin from any kind of sources according your energy choices with your strategies: from countries close to consumer zones or just by avoiding shale gas for example. You would have the unique ability to communicate on your gas sourcing mix and not only on your green gas purchases.”

The winning solution will be implemented within ENGIE and be a part of our wide range of trading energy solutions.

ENGIE analysts and clients discuss energy prices over breakfast

The Commodities Breakfast, held at the Pavillon Vendome in Paris on November 27, offered ENGIE’s clients an exclusive opportunity to interact with our economic experts and learn more about macroeconomic trends and the shifting dynamics of energy markets.

The theme of the event was “Economic slowdown, carbon price uncertainty… what are the prospects for energy prices in 2019?”

Eighty ENGIE clients were invited to the breakfast to attend a presentation on the latest macroeconomic and energy news. They also had the opportunity to directly interact with our experts after the breakfast.

Macro trends

The event comes at a time when the global economy is bracing for a slowdown, after nearly a decade of expansion following the Great Recession. Rising inflationary pressures could result in an increased tightening of monetary policy and further accentuate the cyclical downturn.

European gas prices, on the other hand, increased significantly in 2018, in line with rising oil, coal and CO2 prices. Europe is set to become more and more vulnerable to shocks on the LNG market and fluctuations in Asian demand as domestic production drops. The growth of LNG export capacity will also start to have an effect on prices from 2019 onwards.

Surging carbon prices

Meanwhile, a return of speculators led to a fourfold increase in carbon prices in just one year—reaching levels not seen since 2008. Even if there is a reduction in carbon credits next year, the question on everybody’s mind is whether the current price is justified.

The Commodities Breakfast did provide our clients with an insight into the factors that might affect the prices.

ENGIE and Institut Pasteur hold a joint hackathon to advance genetic science

ENGIE analysts participated in a joint two-day hackathon with scientists from the Institut Pasteur and succeeded in developing an algorithm to automate the analysis of DNA sequences. Three teams, each composed of members from both ENGIE and Institut Pasteur, competed in the hackathon to develop a method to identify the position of chromosome loops.

image of the post ENGIE and Institut Pasteur hold a joint hackathon to advance genetic science

The hackathon, held on October 4 and 5 in Paris, was an opportunity for ENGIE Global Energy Management experts to work on a cutting-edge research topic outside of the energy field. The hackathon challenged our experts to implement a method of their choice to locate the positions of chromosome loops and provided them with a great opportunity to work across disciplines with experimental and computational biologists to improve our understanding of DNA.

ENGIE is committed to building a better planet by using its expertise not just in the energy sector, but across all sectors. It has special expertise in machine learning—an approach relevant to the identification of loop positions.

The existing algorithms do not allow for the accurate detection of chromosome loop events with many undetected patterns. Machine learning, on the other hand, allows us to generate simulated loop data and a group of simulated maps with known loop positions to evaluate the accuracy of the different methods proposed and rank them.

Fundamental biological processes such as replication, regulation of gene expression and DNA repair depend on chromosome architecture. Information acquired through the new algorithm will give us a better understanding of some of the biological processes and mechanisms involved in human pathologies such as the development of tumor cells.

The hackathon was a fun and innovative approach to interdisciplinary collaboration that allowed GEM experts to take their research beyond the energy sector. Energy and healthcare are two fields of great importance to people in their daily lives and ENGIE is committed to using its skills to improve lives across these sectors.
