Orange Romania signed with ENGIE Romania (ENGIE) a new vPPA (Virtual Power Purchase Agreement) which consists of the purchase of renewable energy on a long-term basis. The new agreement, concluded for 10 years, will cover approximately 40 GWh of Orange’s annual electricity needs sourced from one of the wind parks owned and operated by ENGIE.
ENGIE, a global reference in low-carbon energy production and supply, as well as related services, has been a long-lasting partner of Orange Romania. In terms of energy contract, the partnership began in 2023 with the signing of our first common vPPA contract with Orange Romania, which consisted in covering 30 GWh of its consumption needs. It is also a reconfirmation of ENGIE’s ambition to be the best energy transition utility by offering secure, predictable, affordable and low carbon energy to its customers.
ENGIE is currently operating 211 MW of renewable generation capacity assets in Romania. The company owns and operates 3 wind farms, with a total installed capacity of 178 MW, as well as 5 photovoltaic parks with a total installed capacity of 33 MW, well spread geographically. In 2024, ENGIE expanded its renewable energy production portfolio in the country with its first hybrid power plant and it is finalizing the construction of a greenfield solar power plant in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County, with a total installed capacity of 37.2 MWp. The company has also plans to foster renewable production and reach 1,000 MW of green installed capacity by 2030.
The purpose of the new agreement is to ensure that Orange Romania’s green energy needs are met and to support the company’s commitment to achieving its #NetCarbonZero target by 2040, in line with its group’s strategic plan – Lead the Future. Through long-term virtual purchases of renewable energy, Orange Romania strengthens its commitment to sustainability, contributing to the increased use of green energy in its operations. The company achieved 93% of its energy consumption from renewable sources in 2024.
“This long-term partnership will significantly contribute to our decarbonization goals, ensuring that we meet a substantial portion of our energy needs with renewable sources. Orange Romania actively supports the transition to green energy in the region as part of its broader commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By investing in green energy solutions, Orange Romania is not only supporting the adoption of renewable energy sources for its own operations but also contributing to the wider energy ecosystem in the region,” stated Julien Ducarroz, CEO Orange România.
The new agreement also contributes to ENGIE’s pole position on the PPA market. In 2024, ENGIE announced 34 deals across six markets and was the only developer to announce PPAs for the three major renewable energy technologies: solar, onshore wind and offshore wind.
“We are delighted to support Orange Romania in their journey towards achieving carbon neutrality by supplying electricity from our renewable energy assets and ensuring predictability of energy costs. We hope more companies will adopt the trend of signing green PPAs, especially in today’s volatile environment, where securing medium- and long-term energy needs can help mitigate energy price risks while advancing sustainability goals,” stated Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania.
